Foot Health Tips from SunTouch WarmWire

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), up to 75% of Americans experience foot problems at some point in their lives. These problems can cause serious pain, discomfort, and even problems performing daily activities. According to the APMA and SunTouch WarmWire, though, there are many things that you can do to keep your feet healthy:

1) Seek help when you experience foot pain. Visit a podiatric physician -- pain is not normal, and can indicate a serious problem.

2) Get to know your feet. If you notice changes in the color or temperature of your feet, discolored toenails, thickened toenails, cracks or cuts in the skin, scaling and peeling on the soles, or any growths, you need to seek out a physician. If your feet are constantly encased in shoes and socks because of cold floors in your home, consider getting radiant floor heat. Not only do electric floor heating systems allow you to go around barefoot more often, which can dry out athlete’s foot and can prevent fungus from growing on your feet, but going barefoot in your home is more comfortable and allows you to notice any changes to your feet.

3) Wash and dry your feet thoroughly. Be especially careful about drying between the toes, especially if you have had fungus infections in the past. If you have radiant floor heating your home, your floors will help you dry out your feet and keep them comfortable as well as fungus free.

4) Cut your toenails straight across. Avoid cutting your toenails too short, or along the sides, as this can lead to ingrown toenails.

5) Choose your shoes well. Ensure that your shoes fit well. Make sure that your shoes also fit the activity you are currently engaged in – wear exercise shoes to exercise and good walking shoes to walk. Switch shoes daily, so that they have a chance to air out and dry out completely before you slip them on again.

6) Keep your feet warm. Cold feet make you feel chilled all over and cold feet can also contribute to poor circulation and aches and pains. If your home has cold floors and drafts, consider floor heating. Radiant heating is sure to make your feet very happy, and is sure to promote good health for your feet. It doesn't hurt that radiant heat is economical and simple to install, and can actually save you money over your current heating system.
